Egyptian Revival Bronze Sphinx

Elegant French Egyptian Revival model of a recumbent sphinx, finely cast and patinated in black, mounted upon a substantial sienna marble plinth ornamented with an applied winged solar disk in darkened bronze. Second half of the nineteenth century, probably c. 1860–1880. 14½ inches wide. Excellent condition, the marble with minor age-related wear.

The fascination with ancient Egypt that swept through France in the nineteenth century found expression not only in architecture and the decorative arts, but also in a remarkable series of sculptural and ornamental objects intended for the most fashionable interiors of the period. Inspired by the monuments illustrated in the Description de l’Égypte and by the growing prominence of Egyptian antiquities in European collections, designers adapted ancient forms to contemporary tastes, creating objects that combined archaeological inspiration with the refinement of French decorative art.

The present sphinx is particularly successful. Reclining upon an architectural plinth of coloured marble, the figure is rendered with a striking sense of repose and monumentality, wearing the traditional nemes headdress and ceremonial beard of an Egyptian pharaoh. The restrained modelling of the body, together with the dramatic contrast between the dark patinated surface and the warm tones of the marble base, gives the piece a distinctly architectural character. The applied winged solar disk — a symbol of royal authority and divine protection in ancient Egyptian art — provides an elegant decorative accent and reinforces the object’s classical inspiration.
